Traditional Chinese medicine is a system of medicine partly based on the idea that an energy, called qi flows along pathways in the body called meridians. In this belief, if the flow of qi along these meridians is blocked or unbalanced, illness can occur. Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine - a treatment which involves the insertion of very thin needles to stimulate specific acupuncture points on the body. The treatment rebalances the body’s energy, and promotes the body’s natural healing response to treat various conditions & injuries, and alleviate symptoms such as pain. TCM practitioners look at the balance of body, mind, and spirit to determine how to restore qi, the yin-yang balance, and good health.

Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band, or what we know as muscle "knots." They are pathophysiological mechanisms causing central and peripheral sensitization. Often times, trigger points may cause referred pain patterns. As an example, when your shoulders have trigger points, you may exerpeicne a referral headache to your temples. With dry needling, our acupuncturists apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to treat each trigger point with precise needling techniques.

Although its main focus is the relationship between the skeleton (particularly the spine) and the nervous system that runs through it, chiropractic is concerned with care of the entire body. Manual adjustments of different bones in the body and the treatment of the muscles, ligaments and tendons around them are their primary methods of helping your body heal itself. Chiropractic helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time. Left unchecked over time, changes in our spines can lead to pain, stiffness or other serious problems.

They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

Pelvic Floor Therapy:
Pelvic health physiotherapy involves the assessment and treatment of various conditions and issues relating to the pelvic floor and surrounding pelvic girdle area. The pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles that attach from your pubic bone to the tail bone (front to back) and sit bones (side to side). They act as a trampoline and are important for bowel and bladder control, pelvic organ support, inner core stability, and sexual function.

Trained pelvic floor physiotherapists perform a detailed assessment to determine the cause of your pelvic floor dysfunction. For a more thorough assessment, an internal vaginal or rectal examination may be indicated with your consent. Based on the findings, each client will receive a personalized treatment plan that may include education with visual aids, exercises, manual therapy, activity modification, and relaxation practices.

Commonly Treated Conditions

Urinary/Fecal Incontinence (stress, urge, mixed)
Urinary Dysfunction (frequency, urgency, incomplete emptying)
Diastasis Rectus Abdominus (DRA)
Constipation
Painful intercourse (Dyspareunia)
Pelvic organ prolapse
Vaginal/vuvlar pain
Low back and pelvic girdle pain
Coccydynia (tailbone) pain
Perinatal & post-partum care

TMJ Physiotherapy:
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) encompass a range of problems associated with the jaw. These conditions may arise from various factors, such as trauma (blow to jaw, car accidents) and overuse (clenching). Many individuals with jaw related pain may also experience neck pain, headaches, and other related facial pain. A comprehensive assessment of these areas will be conducted. Our goal is to help assess the jaw related discomfort and provide treatment such as manual therapy (including massage, joint mobilizations, intra-oral massage), education and self relieving techniques on how to manage jaw pain.

Hydrotherapy:
Hydrotherapy refers to water-based treatments or exercises of therapeutic intent, in particular for relaxation, fitness, and physical rehabilitation. Treatments and exercises are performed while floating, partially submerged, or fully submerged in water. Many hydrotherapy procedures require constant attendance by a trained therapist, and are performed in a specialized temperature-controlled pool. Rehabilitation commonly focuses on improving the physical function associated with illness, injury, or disability.

Aquatic therapy encompasses a broad set of approaches and techniques, including aquatic exercise, physical therapy, aquatic bodywork, and other movement-based therapy in water (hydrokinesiotherapy). Treatment may be passive, involving a therapist or giver and a patient or receiver, or active, involving self-generated body positions, movement, or exercise.

For orthopedic rehabilitation, aquatic therapy is considered to be synonymous with therapeutic aquatic exercise, aqua therapy, aquatic rehabilitation, water therapy, and pool therapy. Aquatic therapy can support restoration of function for many areas of orthopedics, including sports medicine, work conditioning, joint arthroplasty, and back rehabilitation programs. A strong aquatic component is especially beneficial for therapy programs where limited or non-weight bearing is desirable and where normal functioning is limited by inflammation, pain, guarding, muscle spasm, and limited range of motion (ROM). Water provides a controllable environment for reeducation of weak muscles and skill development for neurological and neuromuscular impairment, acute orthopedic or neuromuscular injury, rheumatological disease, or recovery from recent surgery.

Various properties of water contribute to therapeutic effects, including the ability to use water for resistance in place of gravity or weights; thermal stability that permits maintenance of near-constant temperature; hydrostatic pressure that supports and stabilizes, and that influences heart and lung function; buoyancy that permits flotation and reduces the effects of gravity; and turbulence and wave propagation that allow gentle manipulation and movement.
